Short answer

No non-stop flight links Kolkata and Malé, so plan on a change at a hub and a typical journey of about 5 to 7 hours. Land at Velana International Airport, then base in Malé city, Hulhumalé or an island in North Malé Atoll. Four to six nights covers a capital stay and a reef. Go between December and April.

Getting from Kolkata to Malé

By air

Velana International Airport (MLE) sits on Hulhulé, beside Malé. No non-stop service normally links Kolkata and Malé, so a change is needed, usually through a hub in the Gulf or in South Asia. Typical journey time from CCU is about 5 to 7 hours with the connection. Confirm routings and baggage rules with the airline when booking, since schedules change by season.

From the airport, Malé is a short ferry crossing or a road journey over the bridge. Hulhumalé is closer still. Public ferries and speedboats serve the resort and guesthouse islands of North Malé Atoll, and transfers are usually arranged with the island where you stay. Check current transfer options before booking, as timings vary.

Other options

Flying is the only practical option. The Maldives is an island nation far out in the Indian Ocean, and no train, bus or ferry route from Kolkata reaches it. Sea crossings exist for cargo and the occasional cruise call, not for ordinary travel planning. Treat the flight as the whole journey and allow a comfortable buffer at the hub.

Where to stay in Malé

Malé city

Best for a first or last night: a compact capital with the fish market, museums and ferries from the harbour. Suits travellers who want city streets and easy transfers rather than beach time.

Hulhumalé

A planned island suburb near the airport, with wide streets, a public beach and quicker transfers. Suits late arrivals, early departures and families who want space without a resort.

North Malé Atoll

Islands with house reefs, diving and clear water, reached by speedboat or seaplane. Suits a beach-focused stay and anyone happy to build the trip around boat timings.

Top things to do in Malé

  1. Malé fish market: Busiest early in the morning, when tuna and reef fish come in. A short walk from the harbour and a good introduction to island food and trade.
  2. Old Friday Mosque: A coral-stone mosque in the old part of Malé, known for carved walls. Dress modestly and check whether entry is allowed at prayer times.
  3. National Museum: Holds royal objects, weapons and manuscripts from Maldivian history. A compact collection in the capital, useful on a wet afternoon.
  4. Sultan Park: Shaded ground beside the museum, with trees and paths. A quiet pause in the middle of the city.
  5. Artificial Beach: A seafront edge on the north-east side of Malé where residents swim and walk in the evening. Modest swimwear is expected.
  6. Sinamalé Bridge: The bridge linking Malé, Hulhulé and Hulhumalé. Cross by road for views back over the water to the capital.
  7. Hulhumalé public beach: A wide, open beach on the newer island, with room to swim. Easier for families than the crowded lanes of Malé.
  8. House-reef snorkelling: North Malé Atoll reefs hold coral, reef fish and the occasional ray. Hire gear through the island you stay on and go with a guide.
  9. Ferry to Villingili: A short public ferry ride from Malé to a quieter island with a beach and narrow lanes. Services run through the day; check times at the jetty.
  10. Tuna and coconut lunch: Tuna, coconut, rice and chilli shape most local meals, with fish rolls and short eats in cafés. Ask what came in that morning.

Three days in Malé

  • Day 1: Malé on foot: Start at the fish market before the heat, then walk the old lanes to the coral-stone Friday Mosque. Add the National Museum and Sultan Park, and finish by the harbour in the evening.
  • Day 2: Hulhumalé and the bridge: Cross the bridge to Hulhumalé for the public beach and wide streets, then return to Malé for the waterfront at sunset. Ferries and taxis make the crossing simple; check return times.
  • Day 3: North Malé Atoll: Take a speedboat to an island in North Malé Atoll for snorkelling, a house reef and a slow lunch. Day visitors need an island that accepts them, so arrange the trip before leaving Malé.

Add two or three nights on a North Malé Atoll island, or stay longer if you dive. Check transfer times with the island before fixing flights home.

Best time to visit Malé

December to April is the dry north-east monsoon, with calmer seas and more settled weather. It is also the busiest stretch, so book beds and transfers early. From May to November the south-west monsoon brings more rain and wind, and crossings can be choppy. Malé stays hot all year, so pack for heat and sun whenever you travel.

Getting around Malé

  • Public ferry: Links Malé with the airport island, Villingili and Hulhumalé. Services are regular in daylight; check the timetable at the jetty.
  • Speedboat: The usual way to reach island resorts and guesthouses in North Malé Atoll. Transfers are arranged with the island, and evening crossings can be limited.
  • Taxi and walking: Malé is small enough to cross on foot, with taxis on the main roads for heavy bags or rain. Check the current fare before setting off.

Malé vs Kolkata: what feels different

Malé is far smaller and quieter than Kolkata: a few square kilometres of straight streets, no trams and little traffic noise. Food shifts from mustard oil and rice to tuna, coconut and chilli, and the sea is always in view. Dhivehi replaces Bengali, though English is widely used. The heat is steadier, with a sea breeze and none of Kolkata's winter haze.

Before you go

  • Visas: Visitors of every nationality receive a free 30-day visa on arrival with a valid passport, an onward ticket and an accommodation booking. Check Maldives Immigration rules before travel.
  • Money: The rufiyaa is the local currency, and US dollars are widely accepted on resort islands. Cards work in hotels and larger shops. Keep cash for ferries and markets, and check the current rate.
  • Language: Dhivehi is the national language. English is widely used in airports, hotels and shops, so daily travel in Malé and on the islands is straightforward.
  • Dress code: Malé is a conservative Muslim city, so cover shoulders and knees away from the beach. Alcohol is generally not served on inhabited islands; resort islands operate under licence.

FAQ

How long does the flight from Kolkata to Malé take?

A typical journey from CCU takes about 5 to 7 hours including a change, since there is normally no non-stop flight. Actual timing depends on the hub and the length of the connection. Confirm the total at booking and leave a buffer between flights.

Is there a non-stop flight from Kolkata to Malé?

Normally no. Routings change at a hub in the Gulf or in South Asia, and schedules shift with the season. Check airlines and booking sites for current options before fixing dates, and allow a longer layover if the connection looks tight.

When is the best time to go from Kolkata to Malé?

December to April is the dry north-east monsoon, with calmer seas and more settled weather. That is also the busiest stretch, so book transfers and beds early. From May to November the south-west monsoon brings more rain and wind, though short showers are normal at any time.

Where should you stay, Malé city or North Malé Atoll?

Malé city suits a first or last night, and anyone who wants markets, museums and ferries on the doorstep. Hulhumalé is quieter and nearer the airport. North Malé Atoll suits a beach stay with house reefs, reached by speedboat or seaplane.

How do you get from Velana International Airport into Malé?

The airport sits on Hulhulé, next to the capital. A short ferry crossing or a road journey over the bridge reaches Malé, and Hulhumalé is closer still. Transfer arrangements change, so check the current options at the airport or with the place you are staying.

Is Malé easy to walk around?

Yes. The capital is small and compact, and most of the old quarter, the fish market and the waterfront can be covered on foot in a morning. Traffic on the main roads is heavy at peak times, so use the pavements and cross with care.

What food should you try in Malé?

Local meals centre on tuna, coconut, rice and chilli, with fish rolls and short eats sold in cafés. Maldivian flatbreads and sweetened tea are common. Alcohol is generally not served on inhabited islands, including Malé, though resort islands operate under licence.

How many nights are enough for a Maldives trip from Kolkata?

Four to six nights works well: a night or two in Malé or Hulhumalé and the rest on a North Malé Atoll island. Shorter trips feel rushed once the change of flight is counted. Add nights if you plan to dive or move between islands.
