Short answer

No non-stop flights link Kolkata and Chiang Mai, so the trip means a change at a hub such as Bangkok, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur; check schedules before booking. Most visitors base themselves in the Old City for temples, Nimmanhaemin for cafés and design, or the riverside for quiet. Three to five nights covers the main sights. Go between November and February, when days are cooler and clearer.

Getting from Kolkata to Chiang Mai

By air

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) sits a few kilometres south-west of the walled city, a short ride from all three main areas. There is normally no non-stop service from Kolkata (CCU), so expect a change, usually at a hub in South East Asia; the typical journey time is 4 to 6 hours. Compare total travel times rather than the first leg, and confirm terminals with the airline before booking.

Metered taxis and app cabs wait outside the arrivals hall, a short ride into the Old City, Nimmanhaemin or the riverside. Songthaews, the shared red pickups, run into town more cheaply, with less certainty about the door. Allow extra time in the evening peak, and check current airport arrangements with Airports of Thailand.

Other options

There is no practical overland route from Kolkata within a normal holiday. Reaching Thailand by train or road means crossing Myanmar or travelling through north-east India, and border rules change; check Indian Railways and the relevant embassies before planning such a route. No passenger ferry links the two countries. For a short break, flying is the only sensible option.

Where to stay in Chiang Mai

Old City

Best for a first visit. Temples, the Sunday walking street and most guesthouses sit inside or beside the moat, and much of the area is walkable.

Nimmanhaemin

Modern cafés, design shops and apartment blocks north-west of the centre. Suits longer stays and travellers who want quiet evenings away from the temple traffic.

Riverside

Green and quiet along the Ping River, with larger hotels and evening restaurants. Good for couples and anyone who wants space from the centre after a day of walking.

Top things to do in Chiang Mai

  1. Wat Phra Singh: The city's most revered temple, in the western Old City, with an old library building and murals. Go early, before the tour groups.
  2. Wat Chedi Luang: A vast ruined brick chedi at the centre of the Old City. Monks sometimes chat with visitors in the grounds.
  3. Doi Suthep: The hill temple above the city, reached by songthaew or car. Clear mornings give views across the plain.
  4. Sunday Walking Street: Ratchadamnoen Road closes to traffic on Sunday evenings for crafts, food and music. Come before dusk.
  5. Warorot Market: A working market near the river for spices, dried fruit and snacks. Mornings are busiest and coolest.
  6. Thai cooking class: Half-day classes usually include a market visit and several dishes, with vegetarian options. Book a day ahead.
  7. Moat and city gates: The moat and the remains of the gates show the shape of the original city. Walk one side in the early morning.
  8. Night Bazaar: Stalls along Chang Klan Road sell textiles and souvenirs, with food stalls behind. Open every evening.
  9. Doi Inthanon day trip: Thailand's highest mountain, with waterfalls and the twin royal chedis. A long day by road; start early.
  10. Nimmanhaemin cafés: Coffee shops and small galleries north-west of the centre. Good for a slow afternoon out of the heat.

Three days in Chiang Mai

  • Day 1: Old City on foot: Start at Tha Phae Gate and work west through the temple courtyards, keeping the walking short and the water bottle full. If the visit includes a Sunday, save the evening for the walking street.
  • Day 2: Doi Suthep and Nimmanhaemin: A songthaew up to Doi Suthep in the morning, back for lunch, then an afternoon in Nimmanhaemin's cafés and shops. Dinner near the university end of the area.
  • Day 3: River and markets: Warorot Market first, then the riverside lanes and a slow lunch on the far bank. Leave the evening for the Night Bazaar and an early night before the flight.

Add two nights for a cooking course and a slow day by the river, or three for Doi Inthanon and Chiang Rai by road. Check local bus times.

Best time to visit Chiang Mai

November to February is the cool, dry stretch: mornings are fresh, the light is clear and walking the Old City is comfortable. December and January are the busiest weeks, so book rooms early. March and April turn hot, and smoke from field burning often sits over the valley, which flattens views and troubles anyone with chest problems. Late February is a good compromise. Check air quality readings and the Thai Meteorological Department before booking.

Getting around Chiang Mai

  • Songthaew: Shared red pickups run set routes around the moat and out to Doi Suthep; state the destination before boarding.
  • Tuk-tuk: Useful for short hops in the centre, since meters are rare; settle the fare before setting off.
  • Bicycle: The Old City and the riverside are flat and slow enough for a bicycle. Traffic outside the moat is not.

Chiang Mai vs Kolkata: what feels different

Chiang Mai is smaller, quieter and much less crowded at street level, with cleaner pavements and a slower morning. Food shifts from rice, fish and mustard oil to northern sausage, coconut curries and sticky rice, and the heat is drier outside the monsoon. Thai is the everyday language, English is common in tourist areas, and Bengali will not help. The pace suits early starts and early nights.

Before you go

  • Entry rules: Rules for Indian passport holders change; check the Royal Thai Embassy site before booking. Confirm what proof of onward travel is asked for.
  • Money: Thai baht. Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants; markets, songthaews and small food stalls run on cash.
  • Language: Thai is the everyday language and English is widely used in tourist areas. A few polite phrases help in markets and at temple gates.
  • Health: Tap water is not for drinking; bottled water is everywhere. Mosquito repellent matters near the river at dusk, and the midday sun in March and April is harsh.

FAQ

Are there direct flights from Kolkata to Chiang Mai?

Not normally. The usual pattern is one change at a hub in South East Asia, with a typical journey of 4 to 6 hours. Routings shift with the season, so compare total travel times rather than the first leg, and confirm terminals with the airline before booking.

When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai from Kolkata?

November to February, when the air is cooler and the light clearer. Kolkata's own winter is pleasant then, so the contrast is gentle rather than dramatic. March and April are hot, and smoke from field burning often sits over the valley. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department.

Which area of Chiang Mai suits a first visit?

The Old City, inside the moat, puts temples, guesthouses and the Sunday market within walking distance. Nimmanhaemin suits longer stays, with cafés, design shops and quieter evenings. The riverside is calmer again, with larger hotels and restaurants along the Ping. All three are a short ride from the airport.

How many days should a Kolkata traveller allow in Chiang Mai?

Three to four nights covers the Old City, Doi Suthep and the markets without hurry. Add a day for a cooking course, and two more for Doi Inthanon or Chiang Rai. Account separately for the change of flights at the start and end of the trip.

Is Chiang Mai easy to get around on foot?

The Old City is, and the moat gives a clear edge to navigate by. Pavements thin out beyond it, and the midday heat in March and April makes walking unpleasant. Songthaews and tuk-tuks fill the gaps between areas; settle the destination or fare first.

What should a visitor eat in Chiang Mai?

Khao soi, a coconut curry noodle soup, and sai ua, the northern pork sausage, are the local staples, served with sticky rice. Night markets and Warorot Market are good places to start. Vegetarian versions are easy to find inside the Old City.

How does the weather in Chiang Mai compare with Kolkata?

November to February is cooler and drier than Kolkata's winter, with genuinely cold mornings on the hills. March and April are hot, and smoke often dulls the sky. The monsoon runs roughly June to September, with heavy afternoon rain, though less humid than Kolkata's summer. Check the Thai Meteorological Department.

Can Chiang Mai be combined with Bangkok on the same trip?

Yes. Frequent domestic flights link the two, and overnight trains run between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Two or three nights in each works for a first trip. Check the State Railway of Thailand and the domestic airlines for current timetables and booking windows.
