Short answer

Reach Da Nang International Airport (DAD) from Kolkata (CCU) with one change at a hub such as Bangkok, Singapore or Hanoi; there is normally no non-stop service, so check schedules before booking. Stay at My Khe beach for sand and seafood, in the city centre for the river and bridges, or in Hoi An for lantern-lit lanes. Three or four nights covers the city and Hoi An. Go between February and May.

Getting from Kolkata to Da Nang

By air

Flights leave from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) near Dum Dum, about 17 km north-east of central Kolkata; allow 45 to 75 minutes by road to Park Street depending on traffic, or take the Yellow Line metro to Jai Hind Bimanbandar and check Metro Railway Kolkata for current service. There is normally no non-stop flight to Da Nang, so a change is needed, usually through a hub in South East Asia or the Gulf. Typical journey time is about 5 to 7 hours.

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) sits close to the city, a short drive from both the Han River bridges and the My Khe beach strip. Taxis and ride-hailing apps meet arrivals, and domestic flights within Vietnam use the same airport. Change money or use a bank ATM in the terminal, and keep the address of your hotel written in Vietnamese for the driver.

Other options

There is no practical rail or road route from Kolkata to Da Nang. Overland travel would mean crossing Myanmar, or Bangladesh and north-east India, then Thailand, Laos or Vietnam, with permits and long bus stages that change often. For a short trip, flying is the only realistic option; confirm the routing and baggage rules with the airline when you book.

Where to stay in Da Nang

My Khe beach

The long beach strip east of the Han River suits swimmers, seafood dinners and slow mornings. Guesthouses and hotels line the shore road, and the city centre is a short cab ride away.

City centre

Best for the Han River, the bridges, the cathedral and the market streets, with restaurants and transport within walking distance. Suits travellers who want to be in the middle of things and see the city after dark.

Hoi An

The old trading town down the coast suits anyone who wants lantern-lit lanes, tailors, cafés and the beach at An Bang. It is quieter than Da Nang and works as a base for My Son.

Top things to do in Da Nang

  1. My Khe beach: A wide sweep of sand east of the Han River, busy at dawn with swimmers and football games. The sea is calmest in spring.
  2. Marble Mountains: Five limestone hills south of the city with caves, shrines and viewpoints. Go in the morning, when the stairways are cooler.
  3. Dragon Bridge: The riverfront bridge breathes fire and water on weekend nights. Check local listings for the current schedule.
  4. Son Tra peninsula: Forest and coastline north-east of the city, with a hilltop pagoda and views over the bay. The road climbs steeply.
  5. Hoi An old town: Wooden merchant houses, assembly halls and the covered bridge, lit by lanterns after dark. Old town entry is ticketed; buy at the official counters.
  6. Ba Na Hills: A hill station reached by cable car, with a French-style village and the Golden Bridge. Cloud and crowds are common; check the day's hours.
  7. Cham Sculpture Museum: Sandstone sculpture from the Champa kingdom, shown in a colonial building beside the Han River. A good hour out of the heat.
  8. My Son Sanctuary: Brick temple towers of the Champa kingdom in a green valley inland. A half-day trip; start early to avoid the heat.
  9. Market food: Mi Quang noodles, banh xeo, spring rolls and grilled seafood. Eat where the tables are full and the menu is short.
  10. Hai Van Pass: The coast road north over the pass gives long views of bays and headlands. A car with a driver makes a half-day trip.

Three days in Da Nang

  • Day 1: beach and river: Swim at My Khe before the sun gets strong, then eat lunch near the sand. In the afternoon see the Cham Sculpture Museum and walk the Han riverfront at dusk, when the bridges light up.
  • Day 2: Marble Mountains and Hoi An: Climb the Marble Mountains in the morning, then drive south to Hoi An for the old town, a late lunch and the lanterns at dusk. Stay overnight there or return to Da Nang.
  • Day 3: Son Tra or Ba Na Hills: Choose Son Tra for forest, pagoda and sea views, or Ba Na Hills for the cable car and Golden Bridge. Keep the evening free for seafood by the beach.

Add a night in Hoi An for the morning market and An Bang beach, or a half-day to My Son. Hue lies north over the Hai Van Pass by road or rail; check current timetables.

Best time to visit Da Nang

February to May is the most comfortable window, with warm days, calmer sea for swimming at My Khe and little rain. March and April are often clear; May turns hotter. Storms are common from September to December, when the beach empties and boat trips may stop. June to August is hot with occasional heavy showers. Check the forecast for central Vietnam before booking.

Getting around Da Nang

  • Ride-hailing apps: Apps work in Da Nang and Hoi An and usually show a fare before you book.
  • Metered taxis: Street taxis are easy to find; ask for the meter at the start of the ride.
  • Train: Coastal trains connect Da Nang with Hue and towns to the south; check Vietnam Railways for times.

Da Nang vs Kolkata: what feels different

Da Nang is smaller and slower than Kolkata, with a clean riverfront, wide roads and far less honking. The food moves from mustard oil and rice to fish sauce, herbs, noodles and grilled seafood, and coffee comes strong and iced. Vietnamese is the everyday language, with English common in hotels, cafés and tour desks. The tropical rain falls on a different pattern from Kolkata's monsoon.

Before you go

  • Visa: Indian passport holders can usually apply for a Vietnam e-visa before travel. Check the official Vietnam immigration portal for current rules, and carry a printed approval.
  • Money: The dong is the local currency. Cards work in hotels, cafés and larger restaurants; carry cash for markets, taxis and street food, and use bank ATMs.
  • Language: Vietnamese is the everyday language. English is widely understood in hotels and cafés; 'xin chao' is hello and 'cam on' is thank you.
  • Tap water: Do not drink tap water. Bottled or filtered water is sold everywhere, and ice in busy cafés and restaurants is usually fine.
