Short answer

Non-stop flights from Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City run only on some days or in some seasons, so check schedules before fixing dates. The flight takes about 3 hours 15 minutes when a direct service operates; otherwise expect a connection through Bangkok, Singapore or Hanoi. Stay in District 1 for the main sights or District 3 for quieter streets. Three or four nights covers the city, and December to April is the dry season.

Getting from Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City

By air

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) sits inside Ho Chi Minh City, a short road distance from District 1 but a slow one in the evening peak. Direct flights from Kolkata (CCU) are limited or seasonal, so confirm that a non-stop is running before booking; when it runs, the flight is about 3 hours 15 minutes. Most travellers connect through Bangkok, Singapore or Hanoi. Immigration queues at SGN can be long, so keep the e-visa printout ready.

From the terminal, metered taxis and app cabs such as Grab are the simplest way in; use the app so the trip is logged. The airport bus runs to the backpacker area and District 1 on fixed routes. Watch the traffic: the ride is short in distance but can stall badly between four and seven in the evening.

Other options

There is no practical land route from Kolkata. Overland travel means crossing Bangladesh, Myanmar or Thailand, with long bus and train legs, permits and several days in transit; border rules for foreign travellers change, so check with the relevant authorities before planning. For a short break, flying is the only sensible option. Sea crossings are not a scheduled passenger service.

Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

District 1

The historic core: Reunification Palace, the museums, Ben Thanh market, Dong Khoi and the riverfront are all walkable. Noisiest and most tourist-facing, but the easiest base for a first visit.

District 3

Leafy streets just north of District 1, with cafes, local restaurants and the War Remnants Museum nearby. Quieter at night and still close enough to walk or take a short cab.

Thao Dien (District 2)

An expatriate area across the Saigon River, full of apartments, bakeries and international restaurants. Calm and green, but you will rely on taxis or app cabs to reach the sights.

Top things to do in Ho Chi Minh City

  1. Reunification Palace: The 1960s presidential palace where the war ended in 1975. State rooms, war rooms and shaded grounds; go early to avoid the heat.
  2. War Remnants Museum: Photographs, testimony and captured equipment from the American war. Rooms are crowded and the content heavy, so allow an hour or two.
  3. Ben Thanh Market: The central market for coffee, textiles and souvenirs, with a night food stretch on the surrounding streets.
  4. Notre-Dame and Central Post Office: French colonial landmarks on Dong Khoi. The cathedral has had long restoration work, so check whether entry is possible; the post office next door still handles mail.
  5. Cholon and Binh Tay: The Chinese quarter in District 5, with a wholesale market, incense-heavy temples and noodle shops. Arrive early, when the market is busiest.
  6. Jade Emperor Pagoda: A small Taoist temple in District 1, thick with incense and carved figures. Mornings are calmer and the light is better.
  7. Cu Chi tunnels: A half-day trip to the tunnel complex outside the city. Organised groups leave early; public buses take longer but avoid the crowds.
  8. Mekong Delta day trip: A long day to My Tho or Ben Tre for boat rides through coconut channels. Two days gives a slower look at delta life.
  9. Coffee and street food: Ca phe sua da, banh mi and bowls of pho from morning stalls. Sit on a low stool and watch the traffic go past.

Three days in Ho Chi Minh City

  • Day 1: District 1 on foot: Start at Ben Thanh market, walk up Dong Khoi to the cathedral and the Central Post Office, then the Reunification Palace. End with a drink on the riverfront or a rooftop bar before dinner.
  • Day 2: Museums and Cholon: War Remnants Museum in the morning, then a cab to District 5 for Binh Tay market and the Thien Hau temple. Finish with noodles in Cholon.
  • Day 3: Out of the city: Either the Cu Chi tunnels or a Mekong Delta day trip, both run as organised tours from District 1. Return in the evening for a last dinner and coffee.

Add a night or two for a slower Mekong Delta trip, or fly on to Hanoi, Da Nang or the beaches at Nha Trang. Book onward travel before the Tet holiday.

Best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City

December to April is the dry season, with less rain and slightly cooler, less humid air; February and March are usually the most comfortable months. The city is hot year-round, so plan sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon. May to November brings heavy afternoon downpours and flooding in low-lying streets. Tet, the Vietnamese new year, falls in late January or February on a lunar calendar; check the current year's dates, as shops and transport slow for several days.

Getting around Ho Chi Minh City

  • On foot: District 1 is walkable, though pavements are uneven and motorbikes use them. Cross roads steadily and predictably.
  • App cabs: Grab covers cars and motorbike taxis and is the easiest way to cross districts. The app fixes the trip before you get in.
  • Metro and bus: The city's metro now links the Ben Thanh area with the eastern suburbs; buses cover the rest. Check current routes and hours with the operator.

Ho Chi Minh City vs Kolkata: what feels different

Ho Chi Minh City moves faster and louder than Kolkata, with far more motorbikes and fewer pavements. Food shifts from rice and fish curries to pho, banh mi and grilled pork with noodles, plus very strong coffee. English is spoken in hotels and tour desks but less on the street. The climate is hotter and more humid for much of the year, and the colonial architecture is French rather than British.

Before you go

  • Entry: Indian passport holders can usually apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before travel. Check the official Vietnam immigration portal for current rules and processing time.
  • Money: The currency is the Vietnamese dong. Cards work in hotels, malls and restaurants, with cash for markets, street food and taxis; check current rates before changing money.
  • Language: Vietnamese, written in Latin script. Learn a few words; hotel desks and tour offices usually manage English.
  • Health: Drink bottled or filtered water and use mosquito repellent in the evenings. Pharmacies are common around District 1.

FAQ

Are there direct flights from Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City?

Non-stop services are limited or seasonal, so check schedules before fixing dates. When a direct flight runs, the journey is about 3 hours 15 minutes. Otherwise the usual route is a connection through Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hanoi, which adds several hours. Compare total journey time, not just the departure board.

How many days do you need in Ho Chi Minh City?

Three or four nights covers District 1, the main museums and a day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels or the Mekong Delta. Add a night or two for a slower delta trip or time in Cholon. A single night is only enough for a stopover between flights.

When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

December to April is the dry season and the easiest stretch for walking and day trips, with February and March usually the most comfortable. May to November brings heavy afternoon showers. Tet, the lunar new year, can close shops and fill transport, so check the current year's dates before booking.

Where should you stay on a first visit to Ho Chi Minh City?

District 1 suits a first visit, with the palace, museums, market and riverfront within walking distance. District 3 is quieter and greener, still close to the centre. Thao Dien, across the river, suits longer stays and travellers who prefer calm, with app cabs for the sights.

How do you get from Tan Son Nhat airport into Ho Chi Minh City?

The airport sits inside the city, close to the centre in distance. Metered taxis and app cabs such as Grab are the simplest option, and public buses run to District 1. The ride is short but slow in the evening peak, so allow time if you have an onward connection.

Is Ho Chi Minh City expensive compared with Kolkata?

Budgets vary with season and travel style, and the city covers a wide range from street stalls to fine dining. Street food, local buses and the metro are the cheapest ways to eat and move. Cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants, with cash for markets. Older figures online go stale, so check before planning.

What food should you try in Ho Chi Minh City?

Pho for breakfast, banh mi from a street cart, com tam (broken rice with grilled pork) and bun thit nuong. Coffee is a serious matter: ca phe sua da, iced with condensed milk, is the everyday order. Cholon is good for Chinese-Vietnamese noodles and morning dim sum.

Can you combine Ho Chi Minh City with the rest of Vietnam?

Yes. Domestic flights link the city with Hanoi, Da Nang, Hue and Nha Trang, and the north-south train runs the length of the country. Most travellers pair the south with Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, or with the beaches. Book onward travel before the Tet holiday.
