Kolkata's tram network is a shadow of the 1970s system, but a handful of corridors still operate daily out of the depots at Belgachia and Gariahat. The routes travellers actually use are short: Esplanade to Ballygunge via Hazra, the Shyambazar–Belgachia stretch along Bidhan Sarani, and the Esplanade–Ballygunge run that skirts the Maidan. Frequency on these is roughly every 20–40 minutes, and the vehicles are the older single-coach cars, not the air-conditioned versions trialled a few years ago.
What Still Runs, and Where
Kolkata's tram network is a shadow of the 1970s system, but a handful of corridors still operate daily out of the depots at Belgachia and Gariahat.
Treat the tram as a sightseeing vehicle rather than transport. A ride from Esplanade to Ballygunge takes around 35–45 minutes against 15–20 in a taxi, which is exactly the point: you pass the Victoria Memorial's rear gates, the Maidan's cricket pitches, the Hazra crossing flower stalls and the older residential blocks off Sarat Bose Road. Fares are a handful of rupees, paid to the conductor, and exact change helps. Carry small notes rather than trying to break a large one.
Timing the Ride and Reading the Route
Best months are November to February, when open windows are pleasant and the light on the Maidan is good from about 3pm. Avoid the 8–10am and 5–7pm crush, when cars fill with commuters and standing room is tight. Mid-morning on a weekday is the calmest window. Monsoon rides are atmospheric but the tracks flood at the Hazra and Tollygunge low points, and services are suspended during heavy rain — check before leaving your hotel.
Signage is in Bengali and English, but route boards are small and sometimes outdated. The reliable method is to ask the conductor where the car terminates before boarding; they will wave you off if it is the wrong direction. The Esplanade terminus is the easiest starting point for visitors, reachable on foot from Chowringhee Road hotels and from the Esplanade metro station. Gariahat, at the southern end, is a useful final stop for shopping and lunch.
Pairing Trams with the Rest of the City
The Esplanade–Ballygunge line pairs well with the Maidan sights: get off near the Victoria Memorial, walk the gardens, then continue by tram or on foot to Park Street for lunch. The Shyambazar end is less scenic but puts you near the older northern neighbourhoods, the Kailash Ghosh sweet shop area and the potters' quarters around Kumartuli, best visited in the weeks before Durga Puja in October. That northern stretch is worth a morning, not a whole day.
From Gariahat, the Ballygunge and Gariahat markets are a short walk, and the Golpark crossing has good South Indian food. If you are staying in Salt Lake or New Town, the tram is not a practical commute — the drive to Esplanade is 30–45 minutes in traffic. Base yourself in central Kolkata instead: anywhere within walking distance of Park Street, Sudderth Street or the Maidan gets you onto the heritage lines in under fifteen minutes.
What to Skip, and What I Would Book
Skip the tram museum at Esplanade if you have limited time; it is small and not consistently open. Skip attempts to ride the full historical network, which no longer exists, and skip any tout offering a 'tram tour' — the scheduled cars are cheap and easy to use yourself. Also skip weekend afternoons on the Ballygunge line in December, when the cars are busy with day-trippers and the wait at the terminus stretches to nearly an hour.
I would book a hotel in central Kolkata, ideally between Park Street and the Maidan, for three or four nights. From there the Esplanade tram terminus, the metro and the main sights are all walkable, and you are not dependent on a car for the ride. Search our Kolkata listings for properties near Park Street and Chowringhee, check the walking distance to Esplanade on the map, and book the central option over a cheaper suburban one — the tram is the attraction, and proximity is what makes it usable.
FAQ
How much does a Kolkata tram ticket cost?
Fares are nominal, in the range of a few rupees, and are paid to the conductor on board. Bring small notes or coins so you do not need change for a larger denomination. Check the current fare on the route board at the terminus before boarding.
Which tram route is best for sightseeing?
The Esplanade to Ballygunge line, which passes the Maidan and the Victoria Memorial. It is the most scenic surviving stretch and the easiest to reach from central hotels. Ride it mid-morning or after 3pm in winter for the best light and fewer crowds.
Where should I stay to use the trams?
Central Kolkata, between Park Street and the Maidan, puts the Esplanade terminus within walking distance. Hotels in Salt Lake or New Town are a 30–45 minute drive away in traffic, which makes a casual tram ride impractical. Choose proximity over room rate for this trip.
