Short answer

Start at the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum on Gurusaday Road in Ballygunge, open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. The galleries on motion, electricity and vintage transport hold attention for two to three hours, and the model train and coal-mine walk-through suit children from about six upwards. Entry is modest, well under what a multiplex ticket costs, and weekday mornings are quietest. Afterwards walk ten minutes to Golpark for a cheap South Indian breakfast. Avoid the weekend afternoon crush when school groups arrive; the galleries echo and queues build at the popular interactive exhibits.

Mornings built for curious children

Combine the museum with a stroll through the leafy lanes of Ballygunge Place and then lunch near Gariahat crossing, where you will find everything from Bengali thalis to pizza. Families with toddlers should note that many older museums have steps and narrow corridors, so a light stroller is easier than a large one. If your children tire quickly, pick a single gallery rather than trying to cover everything. The nearby Rabindra Sarobar lake, reached by rickshaw from Golpark, offers shaded paths and ducks, and it is free.

Trams, trams and the Maidan

The heritage tram along Esplanade to Shyambazar is one of the cheapest thrills in the city and a genuine Kolkata experience for children. Board at Esplanade in the morning, sit near the front, and ride as far as you fancy; the old cars creak and sway, and the route passes through some of the busiest streets in north Kolkata. Young children love it, though it is slow and hot in the afternoon. Pair the ride with a visit to the Marble Palace near Chorbagan, which is free but requires a permit from the tourism office the day before.

The Maidan is the natural next stop: open grass, pony rides near the Victoria Memorial, and space to run after a morning of sitting still. The Victoria Memorial gardens charge a small entry fee for adults and less for children; go before eleven or after four to dodge the heat. The zoo on Belvedere Road opens at nine and closes on Thursdays, and the adjoining Alipore Zoological Gardens take half a day. Skip theNicco Park water rides in December, when the queues for the slides stretch past an hour.

Riverside evenings and the science city option

Prinsep Ghat, on the river south of the Howrah Bridge, is the best free evening in Kolkata for families. The colonnaded ghat fills with locals at sunset, and the walk along the Strand Road is flat and safe for scooters and small bicycles. Take a short boat ride from the ghat if the operators are running; otherwise watch the barges and the bridge light up. Arrive around five in winter and closer to five-thirty in summer. There are snack stalls but few decent restaurants nearby, so plan dinner back in Ballygunge or Park Street.

Science City on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass is the big-ticket option and worth a full morning. The main hall is vast, the dinosaur gallery appeals to younger children, and the adjoining convention centre has air conditioning. It is fifteen to twenty minutes by car from Salt Lake and forty minutes from central Kolkata in traffic. Entry is moderate and the cable car and 3D theatre cost extra. I would book Science City over Nicco Park for a family with mixed ages, and save the amusement park for teenagers who want adrenaline.

Where to base a family and when to come

For families, I would book in Ballygunge or Gariahat. Both are leafy, close to the museum and the lakes, and well served by taxis and the metro at Kalighat. Salt Lake suits anyone visiting Science City and the airport, with newer hotels and quieter roads, but it is far from the Maidan sights. Park Street and Sudderth Street put you within walking distance of the Victoria Memorial and the tram, at the cost of noise and traffic. Avoid the backpacker lanes around Sudder Street if you need quiet bedtimes.

October to February is the season to come: cool mornings, clear evenings, and the puja crowds in late September and October, which are spectacular but hard work with small children. March and early April are hot but manageable if you shift sightseeing to early mornings. The monsoon from June to September brings flooded streets and cancelled outings, so avoid it with young children. Book hotels at least a fortnight ahead for the puja period, when the city fills up.

FAQ

Is Kolkata easy to get around with children?

Taxis and app-based cabs are cheap and plentiful, and the metro is fast and air-conditioned between Kalighat and Dum Dum. Trams are slow but fun for short rides. Avoid rush hour between 9am and 11am and after 5pm, when roads crawl and young children get restless.

Which area should families book a hotel in?

Ballygunge and Gariahat are best for easy access to the museum, lakes and restaurants, with quieter streets. Salt Lake suits Science City and the airport. Park Street works for the Victoria Memorial and tram but is noisier at night. I would choose Ballygunge for a first family visit.

What should we skip with young children?

Skip afternoon sightseeing in April and May, the crowded tram routes at rush hour, and the water rides at Nicco Park in peak season. The Marble Palace requires a permit and has limited opening hours, so skip it unless your children are older and you have planned ahead.
