The Indian Museum in Kolkata is India's oldest museum, founded in 1814 by the Asiatic Society and run today from a long colonial building on Chowringhee, Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Galleries cover archaeology, sculpture, art and natural history, and the collection includes the Bharhut stupa railings, Gandhara Buddhist sculpture, an Egyptian mummy and a replica of the Ashokan lion capital. The scale surprises visitors who expect one hall of glass cases: art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology and botany fill a single circuit that can take in most of the museum. The building is part of the visit, with a central entrance and staircase leading to rooms off long corridors. Labels are in English and Bengali, and allow about two hours; the museum closes on Mondays, so check the official website before travelling. Being a short walk from Park Street, it is easy to pair with a day in central Kolkata.
