About FabHotel Hill Fort

The FabHotel Hill Fort suits first-time visitors who want to reach the sights and the city's best-known restaurants on foot. It stands in the Park Street area, a short walk from Park Street itself, and the Indian Museum, the South Park Street Cemetery and New Market all lie within about a kilometre. Anyone who plans a day around walking, with short cab rides for the longer hops, gets the most from this address.

This is a three-star hotel on the first floor of a building on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. Expect a simple, comfortable stay: air-conditioned rooms, Wi-Fi, a 24-hour front desk, room service and luggage storage. The appeal lies in the position rather than in a long list of facilities. It works for a short city visit, for a night between trains, and for travellers who would rather stay central than in a larger property on the edge of the city.

Location and neighbourhood

Park Street, officially Mother Teresa Sarani, is the name to quote when asking directions. The street carries the city's best-known eating houses, among them Flurys, which opened in 1927, Peter Cat, Mocambo and Trincas. The Asiatic Society, founded in 1784, and the South Park Street Cemetery, opened in 1767, give the area its older layer. Camac Street, Middleton Row and Russell Street run off the main road, and the budget lanes of Sudder Street and Free School Street lie to the north.

Park Street is 0.4 km away and reachable on foot by road. The Indian Museum is 0.8 km, the South Park Street Cemetery 0.9 km, New Market 1 km and St Paul's Cathedral 1.4 km, all walkable at an easy pace. Esplanade, 1.4 km away, takes 10 to 20 minutes by road. The Victoria Memorial is 1.7 km, 10 to 20 minutes by road, or roughly 20 to 25 minutes on foot across the Maidan.

Mornings here are the calmest part of the day. Offices open, the Maidan fills with walkers and the pavements are clear before traffic builds. Evenings belong to the restaurants, and Park Street stays busy until late. During Durga Puja, usually late September or October, crowds swell and some roads close near the larger pandals. The Christmas lights on Park Street and at Allen Park, from mid-December to New Year, bring another busy stretch, as does the book fair in late January or early February.

Rooms and facilities

Business travellers will find the essentials in place: a desk to work at, a telephone, Wi-Fi and room service for meals taken in. The 24-hour front desk helps guests arriving on late flights or overnight trains, and luggage storage covers the gap between a morning train and a room. Families can ask about rooms that take an extra bed. Non-smoking rooms can be requested, and a wake-up service is useful before an early departure.

Air conditioning matters from March onwards, when the low thirties arrive, and through April and May, when daytime heat often passes 35 °C and evening storms break it. The monsoon, roughly June to September and heaviest in July, brings humidity and waterlogging after heavy rain, so cool, dry rooms are welcome then. Rooms come with a bath or shower, towels, toiletries and a WC, and housekeeping keeps the practical side in order.

Confirm a few details when booking: check-in and check-out times, room service hours, and whether the room offered has a window and a desk. Light sleepers may want a room away from the street side of the building. Ask about the identification accepted at reception and about leaving bags after check-out. Winter mornings can be hazy with poor air quality, so air conditioning helps on those days as much as it does in the heat.

Getting there

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) is about 14.6 km away in straight-line terms, and 45 to 75 minutes by road depending on traffic. A metered yellow Ambassador taxi or an app cab both work; insist on the meter in the yellow taxis. The Yellow Line metro now reaches Jai Hind Bimanbandar station at the airport, but services are still expanding, so check Metro Railway Kolkata before relying on it.

Howrah station, on the west bank of the Hooghly, is 3.7 km away, a road trip of 15 to 30 minutes. Sealdah, on the east side of the centre, is 2.1 km away, or 15 to 25 minutes by road. Both are busy at most hours, so allow for queues at the taxi rank. Some long-distance trains and services to Bangladesh use Kolkata station at Chitpur, so check the station on the ticket before setting out.

The Blue Line metro is the simplest way to cross the centre. Park Street station is 0.5 km from the hotel and Maidan station 1.1 km. The line runs from Dakshineswar in the north to Kavi Subhash in the south, through Esplanade, Central, Kalighat and Rabindra Sadan. The Green Line links Howrah Maidan under the river to Esplanade, Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V, the river tunnel having opened in 2024. Check Metro Railway Kolkata for hours and current stations.

Food and sights near FabHotel Hill Fort

The Indian Museum, 0.8 km away, was founded in 1814 and is the oldest museum in India, with collections that can fill a morning. The South Park Street Cemetery, 0.9 km away and opened in 1767, is a quiet expanse of obelisks and tombs worth an hour of slow walking. St Paul's Cathedral, consecrated in 1847 and 1.4 km away, stands near the Birla Planetarium on the edge of the Maidan.

Eating is the main event in this area. Park Street's restaurants and music venues are 0.4 km away, with Flurys for breakfast or cake, and Peter Cat, Mocambo and Trincas for a longer evening. Nizam's near New Market is credited with the original kathi roll. For Bengali sweets, look for mishti doi, rosogolla and sandesh, and for nolen gur sweets in the winter months.

New Market, 1 km away, opened in 1874 as Hogg Market and remains the place for shopping in the immediate area, from fabric to food. Camac Street, Middleton Row and Russell Street carry smaller shops and offices. In December the lights at Allen Park and along Park Street draw evening crowds. Esplanade, 1.4 km away, has the older commercial streets around it. Most of this is on foot, with a short cab ride to New Market if bags get heavy.

A day from FabHotel Hill Fort

Start with the Indian Museum, 0.8 km away, and give it the whole morning. Check opening days with the museum before setting out, since public museums in Kolkata close on selected days. From there, walk 0.9 km to the South Park Street Cemetery and spend an hour among the tombs and obelisks. Both are close enough to return to the hotel for a rest before lunch.

In the afternoon, take a cab to the Victoria Memorial, 1.7 km away and 10 to 20 minutes by road, and allow time for the 64-acre grounds as well as the galleries. It is closed on Mondays and some national holidays. On the way back, stop at St Paul's Cathedral, 1.4 km from the hotel, then walk on to New Market, 1 km, for tea and shopping before the light goes.

Spend the evening on Park Street, 0.4 km away and an easy walk. Book a table at one of the long-established restaurants, or begin with a drink and decide later. Park Street metro station is 0.5 km away if the evening ends further down the road, and Maidan station is 1.1 km. In December, add the Christmas lights at Allen Park to the walk back.

Booking tips and when to go

Book early for Durga Puja, usually late September or October, when the city fills and this central area is in demand. Check the current year's dates before fixing travel. The Christmas season, with lights on Park Street and at Allen Park from mid-December to New Year, is the other busy stretch, along with the International Kolkata Book Fair in late January or early February. Weekdays outside these periods are calmer. Confirm check-in and check-out times when booking.

November to February is the best time for this area. December and January have highs in the mid-twenties Celsius, February is pleasant, and November is dry and comfortable. March warms into the low thirties, April and May are hot and humid with evening storms, and the monsoon from roughly June to September brings waterlogging after downpours. October still sees rain, which usually clears before the pujas. Winter mornings can be hazy with poor air quality.

Carry cash for taxis, markets and street food, though cards and UPI are widely accepted in hotels, malls and restaurants. Insist on the meter in yellow taxis or use an app cab instead. Drink bottled water. Temples such as Kalighat and Dakshineswar ask for modest dress and shoes left outside, and the same courtesy applies at any shrine. For anything that changes, from metro hours to museum opening days, check the official body concerned.
