About Heaven Place Guest House

Heaven Place Guest House is a one-star guesthouse at FE 137, Sector 3, Salt Lake City, in the planned township east of central Kolkata. It suits travellers whose business sits in the Sector V offices, and anyone who wants a shorter run to the airport than a central address gives. The place works for a few nights of practical, unshowy accommodation: a bed, air conditioning and an on-site restaurant. Families on a short city visit and solo travellers on a tight itinerary fit here equally well, as do guests who simply want a quiet base away from the oldest parts of the city.

This is a simple base rather than a full-service hotel. The property is rated one star, so the essentials are what count: Wi-Fi, air conditioning, room service, breakfast, laundry, luggage storage, parking and a business centre. There is a garden and picnic area, shops and a gift shop on the premises, and an ATM. Guests travelling for work get a straightforward stay close to the offices they came to visit, and light sleepers get an address off the busiest central streets, where the township layout keeps nights calmer.

Location and neighbourhood

Salt Lake, or Bidhannagar, is a planned township built on reclaimed wetland east of the city centre. Roads are wide and the layout is grid-like, which makes navigation easier than in the older quarters of Kolkata. Sector V, the township's office and IT hub, sits close by, and Central Park and the Nalban boating complex are both within Salt Lake. The East Kolkata Wetlands, a Ramsar site, lies next to the township, so the eastern edge opens onto water and reed beds rather than more built-up city.

Two metro stations sit within walking distance: Central Park and Karunamoyee, both about 0.7 km from the door. For almost everything else, plan on a ride rather than a walk. Park Street is 7.3 km away, 25 to 45 minutes by road, Esplanade 7 km, and the Victoria Memorial 8.6 km, 30 to 50 minutes. The airport is 8.7 km, 30 to 50 minutes. Parking is available at the guesthouse if you arrive with your own vehicle or a hired car.

Mornings around Sector 3 are quiet. Office-bound traffic builds on the main arteries while the side streets stay calm. Evenings bring people out towards Central Park and the Sector V offices as shifts end. During Durga Puja, usually late September or October, pandals appear across the township and roads close to traffic in the evenings, so allow extra time for any trip. Kali Puja follows on the new-moon night of Diwali. Check the current year's dates with West Bengal Tourism before fixing travel.

Rooms and facilities

Rooms are set up for work rather than for show. Wi-Fi and air conditioning come as standard, a television is listed, and the business centre handles copying when documents need to go out. The on-site restaurant covers lunch and dinner, with room service if you would rather eat in. Breakfast is served, and breakfast in the room is listed. Laundry and dry cleaning keep a week of shirts going, luggage storage helps on a late departure day, and free bottled water, newspapers, iron and board, and a safe cover the practical side.

Kolkata's heat and monsoon decide how a room gets used. Air conditioning matters from March onwards and again through the humid weeks before the rains break. The monsoon runs roughly June to September, heaviest in July, with waterlogging after downpours, so a cool room and a restaurant on the premises count for more than they sound. Free bottled water, toiletries, slippers and a shower are listed. Shoe shine and an iron and board help keep clothing presentable through damp weather.

Ask the property directly about the details that matter for your dates: room type, whether breakfast comes with your booking, check-in and check-out timings, and how late the restaurant serves. A car rental service can be arranged, which is useful for an airport run or a day out of the city. Pets are not allowed. Confirm payment methods before arrival, since practice at smaller guesthouses varies. A reception area is listed, so there is someone to speak to when you arrive.

Getting there

From Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) near Dum Dum, the guesthouse is about 8.7 km in a straight line and 30 to 50 minutes by road, depending on traffic. That is a shorter airport run than most central addresses allow. App cabs and yellow Ambassador taxis both work; insist on the meter in the yellow taxis. The airport is also served by Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro station on the Yellow Line, with services expanding, so check Metro Railway Kolkata before relying on it.

From Howrah station on the west bank, the distance is 7.6 km, or 25 to 45 minutes by road once you are across the river. From Sealdah, on the east side of the centre, it is 5 km and 20 to 35 minutes. Some long-distance trains and services to Bangladesh use Kolkata station at Chitpur. Allow more time in the morning and evening peaks, and more again in rain, when the approach roads slow down considerably.

The Green Line metro is the most predictable way in and out. Central Park and Karunamoyee stations are each about 0.7 km away, and the line runs from Howrah Maidan under the Hooghly to Esplanade, Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V. The river tunnel opened in 2024. Fares are set by the operator; check the current fare. Purple, Orange and Yellow lines are partly open and expanding, so confirm stations and hours with Metro Railway Kolkata before planning a journey around them.

Food and sights near Heaven Place Guest House

Tangra and Tiretta Bazaar are 3.9 km away. Tangra is the centre of the city's Chinese community and its Indian-Chinese cooking, while Tiretta Bazaar, the older Chinatown, holds a Chinese breakfast market early in the morning. College Street and the Indian Coffee House at Albert Hall are 5.5 km off, the book market known as Boi Para running past Presidency University. Both are half-day outings rather than strolls, and both are better started early, before the traffic thickens.

Eco Park in New Town is 5.6 km away, a large urban park opened in 2012 and a good place to walk in the cooler hours. Marble Palace, also 5.6 km, is an 1835 private residence in North Kolkata; entry needs a free permit, so check the current arrangements. Jorasanko Thakurbari, 5.9 km, is Tagore's family home and birthplace, now the Rabindra Bharati Museum. All three need a ride, and pairing two in one outing saves a return crossing of the township.

Food is straightforward. The guesthouse restaurant covers lunch and dinner, with breakfast in the room if that suits. For a change, Tangra is the nearest of the eating areas, 3.9 km away. City-centre addresses need a ride: Nizam's near New Market is credited with the original kathi roll, Nahoum's sits in New Market, and Flurys, Peter Cat, Mocambo and Trincas are around Park Street, 7.3 km off. Oxford Bookstore is on Park Street too. Street food such as phuchka and jhalmuri is widely sold.

A day from Heaven Place Guest House

Start with breakfast at the guesthouse, then walk 0.7 km to Central Park for a circuit of the township's main green space before the day heats up. Karunamoyee, also 0.7 km away, puts you on the Green Line towards Esplanade or Sealdah if the day's business is in the centre. On a working day the Sector V offices are the short hop; on a sightseeing day, take a cab and keep the first stop early.

Spend the afternoon at Eco Park, 5.6 km away, or at Marble Palace, the same distance, remembering the free permit for the latter. Jorasanko Thakurbari at 5.9 km pairs well with Marble Palace in a single North Kolkata loop. Move between them by app cab or a hired car rather than on foot, since the distances cross both the township and the old city. Carry water and plan the return leg before the evening peak.

In the evening, head to Tangra, 3.9 km off, for Indian-Chinese food, or continue to College Street, 5.5 km, for the Indian Coffee House and the book stalls. Both are easier on a weekday than at the weekend. If the day has been long, room service is the simplest end to it, with the garden and picnic area for a quiet hour outdoors. Check metro timings for the return leg with Metro Railway Kolkata.

Booking tips and when to go

Book well ahead for Durga Puja, usually late September or October, and for the Christmas period, when Park Street and Allen Park are lit from mid-December to the New Year. Rooms go quickly then. Weekday stays are easier than weekends around Sector V. If arrival is late, tell the property in advance and confirm reception hours. Rush hours on the roads into the centre run long, so leave slack around meetings. Check the current year's festival dates with West Bengal Tourism.

November to February is the most comfortable window for this area, with December and January the coolest and February pleasant. March warms up, April and May are hot and humid, often above 35 °C, with evening storms, and the monsoon runs roughly June to September. Winter mornings can be hazy with poor air quality. The township's wide roads drain better than the old city, but waterlogging still follows heavy downpours. Check the India Meteorological Department forecast before travelling.

Carry cash for taxis, markets and street food; cards and UPI are widely accepted in hotels, malls and restaurants. Yellow Ambassador taxis are metered, so insist on the meter, and app cabs are the alternative. Drink bottled water. At temples such as Kalighat and Dakshineswar, dress modestly and remove shoes where required. Most foreign visitors need an Indian e-Visa before travel, through the official Indian Visa Online portal. Bengali is the local language, Hindi and English are widely understood, and dhonnobad means thank you.
