About Icy White Rose

Icy White Rose is a three-star hotel on Mahanirban Road in Gariahat, in the leafy south of Kolkata. It suits slower trips rather than rushed ones: the address puts Gariahat market, Rabindra Sarobar and a cluster of South Kolkata sights within easy reach, and the surrounding quarter is known for home-style Bengali cooking. Families, shoppers and travellers who prefer a quiet residential base to the central business district tend to settle here well, using the hotel as a place to sleep and eat between outings.

The property is a straightforward three-star city hotel rather than a boutique address. Rooms have air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a desk, a television and a private bathroom, and the front desk is staffed around the clock. Room service, laundry, dry cleaning and parking are all part of the set-up, and family rooms are available. Expect a practical, mid-range base for a few nights of shopping, temple visits and eating, not a resort with grounds to wander.

Location and neighbourhood

Gariahat is residential South Kolkata with a busy shopping spine. The market here is one of the city's main places to buy sarees, and it doubles as a fish and vegetable market in the mornings. Ballygunge Phari, Lake Market, Southern Avenue and the Dakshinapan shopping centre belong to the same comfortable, green quarter. Streets are shaded, buildings are low to mid-rise, and the pace is calmer than Esplanade or Park Street, which are a short ride west.

Gariahat market is on the doorstep and can be walked. Rabindra Sarobar lake makes a good early stroll. For everything else, plan on a ride: Jatin Das Park and Kalighat metro stations are each about 1.5 km away, Victoria Memorial is 3.3 km, Park Street 3.8 km and Esplanade 5.1 km. Autos and yellow taxis are easy to find along Gariahat Road, and it is worth insisting on the meter in the Ambassadors.

Mornings belong to the market: fish, vegetables and flowers arrive early, and the side streets are quiet before the shops open. Evenings bring shoppers to Gariahat and walkers to Southern Avenue and the lake. During Durga Puja, usually late September or October, neighbourhood pandals across South Kolkata draw crowds late into the night and traffic around Gariahat thickens. Christmas lights on Park Street, a short ride away, run from mid-December to New Year. Check the current year's dates.

Rooms and facilities

Business travellers get a desk, Wi-Fi, a telephone, a safe and a 24-hour front desk, which helps with late arrivals and early starts. Families can ask for the family rooms and use laundry and dry cleaning to keep pace with the humidity. Room service covers meals when you are too tired to go out, and wake-up calls are available. Irons, hairdryers and toiletries are provided; confirm what is in your particular room when you book.

Air conditioning matters here. April and May are hot and humid, often above 35 °C, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and waterlogging after downpours. A carpeted room with a fan as well as air conditioning is comfortable in the shoulder months of February and November. Ask for a non-smoking room if that matters to you, and check whether your bathroom has a shower only or a bath as well.

Settle a few things before you travel: your arrival time, since the desk is staffed round the clock but rooms are released on the property's own schedule; whether you want a room away from the road; and what parking you need, as car parking is available on site. Confirm the current check-in and check-out times and the laundry turnaround. Ask about the terrace and the fireplace, both listed among the room features, if either appeals.

Getting there

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) sits near Dum Dum, about 17.5 km from the hotel in a straight line. By road that is usually 50 to 85 minutes, depending on traffic through the city and Gariahat. Allow longer in the morning rush or during rain, when roads flood. Airport taxis and app cabs both serve the terminal. The Yellow Line metro to Jai Hind Bimanbandar is expanding; check Metro Railway Kolkata for current services.

Howrah station, on the west bank, is 7.4 km away, roughly 25 to 45 minutes by road once you cross the river. Sealdah, on the east side of the centre, is closer at 5.4 km, about 20 to 35 minutes. Both are large, busy terminals, so fix a clear meeting point with your driver. Kolkata station at Chitpur handles some long-distance trains. From either terminal a metered taxi or app cab is simplest with luggage.

The metro is the quickest way to travel north and south. Jatin Das Park and Kalighat, both on the Blue Line, are about 1.5 km from the door, a short auto or taxi hop. From there, trains run to Park Street, Esplanade and Central, and north to Shyambazar and Dakshineswar. The Green Line links Esplanade with Howrah Maidan, Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V. Check Metro Railway Kolkata for current stations and hours.

Food and sights near Icy White Rose

Kalighat Kali Temple is the closest sight, about 1.8 km away, one of the Shakti Peethas, with the present temple dating from 1809. Go early and dress modestly. St Paul's Cathedral, consecrated in 1847, and South Park Street Cemetery, opened in 1767, are each around 3.1 km out and pair naturally on one outing. The cemetery's weathered obelisks and the cathedral's cool interior make a quiet contrast to the market streets.

Victoria Memorial, 3.3 km away, is the city's landmark marble monument, built between 1906 and 1921, with 64 acres of grounds and a museum that closes on Mondays and some national holidays. Mother House on AJC Bose Road, also about 3.3 km, holds Mother Teresa's tomb and makes a short, sober visit. Both are easy to combine with lunch on Park Street, which is 3.8 km from the hotel.

Bengali home-style food is the local speciality: look for thalis, fish curries and mishti doi around Ballygunge and Lake Market. For a wider choice, Park Street's old restaurants are a short ride away, among them Flurys, Peter Cat, Mocambo and Trincas. Nizam's near New Market is credited with the original kathi roll, and Indian Coffee House on College Street is an institution. Shopping means Gariahat market for sarees and Dakshinapan for crafts.

A day from Icy White Rose

Start early with Kalighat Kali Temple, 1.8 km away, before the crowds build and the day heats up. Take a taxi or auto, since the walk along Gariahat Road is not pleasant in traffic. Return to Gariahat for breakfast and a slow look at the market, then rest through the hottest part of the afternoon. In winter the middle of the day is fine for walking; in May it is not.

Spend the afternoon on the colonial trail: Victoria Memorial first, 3.3 km from the door and 15 to 30 minutes by road, then St Paul's Cathedral and South Park Street Cemetery, both about 3.1 km away. Once there, the three sit close enough to link on foot. Carry water, and check the Victoria Memorial's opening days, since the museum closes on Mondays and some national holidays.

Come back towards Gariahat for the evening. Browse the saree shops, walk to Rabindra Sarobar for air and a lake view, then eat Bengali food in Ballygunge. If you want Park Street, it is 3.8 km and 20 to 30 minutes by road, close enough for dinner and a taxi home. On Durga Puja nights, allow extra time for pandal traffic and walk where you can.

Booking tips and when to go

Book well ahead for Durga Puja, usually late September or October, and for the Christmas season, when the Park Street lights draw visitors from mid-December to New Year. The International Kolkata Book Fair in late January or early February and the Dover Lane Music Conference in January also fill the city. For road journeys, avoid the morning and evening office rush; the airport run can take much longer on a wet day. Confirm your arrival time with the desk.

November to February is the best season for this area. Days are dry and comfortable, mornings can be hazy, and a walk to Gariahat market or Rabindra Sarobar is easy. March warms quickly, April and May are hot and humid with evening storms, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and waterlogging. October is a bridge month as the rains end. Check the India Meteorological Department for forecasts before packing.

Carry cash for taxis, markets and street food, though cards and UPI are widely accepted in shops and restaurants. Insist on the meter in yellow taxis, or use an app cab. Drink bottled or filtered water. At Kalighat and other temples, dress modestly and expect to remove your shoes; some inner sanctums are open to Hindus only. Most foreign visitors need an Indian e-Visa before travel, through the official Indian Visa Online portal.
