About Bhubanbari

Bhubanbari suits travellers who want North Kolkata as a base rather than a view. The hotel stands on Goabagan Street, among the old mansions, ghats and idol workshops that make this the most historically layered quarter of the city. Guests come for heritage walks, for the lanes around Shobhabazar and Bagbazar, and for the Durga Puja season, when the neighbourhood fills with pandals and processions. If your days are built around old Calcutta rather than around a business district, the address does most of the work.

This is a small, practical hotel rather than a large chain property. The listed facilities are Wi-Fi, air conditioning and parking, backed by a longer list of everyday comforts including a kitchen, a refrigerator, a terrace, a garden and a balcony. The appeal is space and a residential setting rather than services, so plan on a short ride for dinner or shopping. It suits independent travellers and families who want room to spread out and are content with a simple base.

Location and neighbourhood

Goabagan Street sits in the older northern part of Kolkata, where the city's Bengali merchant and aristocratic past is still visible in the rajbaris, the river ghats and the clay workshops. Shobhabazar, Bagbazar, Kumartuli, Jorasanko and Shyambazar surround the hotel, and each has its own reason to walk. Shobhabazar is known for its Rajbari family puja, Bagbazar for its ghats on the Hooghly, Jorasanko for Tagore's family home and Kumartuli for the potters who make the Durga idols. This is a residential district first and a tourist one second.

Four of the nearest sights are close enough to reach on foot or after a very short ride: Marble Palace at 1.5 km, Jorasanko Thakurbari at 1.6 km, Kumartuli at 1.8 km and College Street with the Indian Coffee House at 1.9 km. Howrah Bridge and Mallick Ghat, at 2.8 km, are better done by taxi or auto-rickshaw. For the central sights, plan on transport: Park Street is 4.6 km away, Esplanade 3.6 km and the Victoria Memorial 5.9 km, each with a road time that depends on traffic.

Mornings here belong to the ghats and the workshops. Flower sellers and potters start early, and the lanes around Bagbazar and Kumartuli are at their most usable before the traffic builds. Evenings are quieter, with family puja at the Shobhabazar Rajbari and street life around the metro stations. In festival weeks the character changes completely: Durga Puja fills the north with pandals, crowds and late-night walking, Kumartuli is at its busiest from July to September, and roads that are calm in February become slow and diverted.

Rooms and facilities

For business travellers, the useful items are the ones that keep a working day intact: Wi-Fi and air conditioning in the room, and parking if you arrive by car. A kitchen and a refrigerator appear among the listed facilities, which makes a longer stay more manageable, though it is worth asking whether they belong to the room or to a shared area. A terrace and a garden give somewhere to take a call or a coffee. Check the strength of the connection before relying on it for meetings.

Families get more room to spread out than a standard city double allows. A balcony, a terrace and a garden are all listed, and pets are allowed, which is unusual in this part of the city and worth confirming when booking. Towels, toiletries and slippers are provided, and the bathroom has a shower and a WC. Late arrivals should send an expected time in advance and ask which entrance to use after dark, since the lanes off Goabagan Street are not brightly lit.

Kolkata's heat and monsoon shape how the room is used. Air conditioning is listed, and it matters from March onwards, when daytime temperatures sit in the low thirties and climb higher in April and May. During the monsoon, roughly June to September, waterlogging after heavy rain can slow every journey, so keep bags off the floor and allow extra time. Ask about hot water timings, about the kitchen and refrigerator arrangements, and about anything on the facilities list you intend to depend on.

Getting there

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) lies near Dum Dum, about 17 km north-east of the city centre. From the airport to Bhubanbari is 10.4 km in a straight line, and 35 to 55 minutes by road depending on traffic. Metered yellow taxis and app-based cabs both work the route; insist on the meter in the yellow taxi. The airport is also served by Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro station on the Yellow Line, with services expanding, so check Metro Railway Kolkata before planning a metro arrival with luggage.

Howrah station, on the west bank of the Hooghly, is 3.2 km away in a straight line, or 15 to 30 minutes by road once you are across the river. Sealdah, on the east side of the centre, is closer at 2.5 km, with a road time of 15 to 25 minutes. Both are straightforward taxi rides, but the bridges and approach roads carry heavy traffic for much of the day. Allow more than the distance suggests and keep the address written down for the driver.

The metro is the most predictable way to cross the city. Sovabazar Sutanuti and Girish Park, both on the north-south Blue Line, are each 1.2 km from the hotel, a short auto-rickshaw ride or a walk for anyone who prefers to start the day on foot. From either station you can reach Esplanade, Park Street, Maidan and Kalighat without changing lines. The East-West Green Line links Howrah Maidan with Esplanade, Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector V, and the river tunnel opened in 2024; check Metro Railway Kolkata for current stations and hours.

Food and sights near Bhubanbari

Marble Palace, 1.5 km away, is an 1835 private residence in North Kolkata with a collection of paintings, statues and curios. Entry needs a free permit and the current arrangements change, so check before setting out. Jorasanko Thakurbari, 1.6 km away, is the Tagore family home and the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore in 1861; it is now the Rabindra Bharati Museum. Both are indoor visits and both suit the hotter part of the day, when walking the lanes is less comfortable.

Kumartuli, 1.8 km away, is the potters' quarter where Durga idols are made, at its busiest from July to September as the workshops fill with straw, clay and paint. College Street, 1.9 km away, is the book market known as Boi Para, with Presidency University close by and the Indian Coffee House at Albert Hall for filter coffee and a long sit. Put these two together for a half day, with a break in between and a taxi for the return leg.

Howrah Bridge, the cantilever Rabindra Setu opened in 1943, is 2.8 km away, and the Mallick Ghat flower market runs beneath the Kolkata end of it. Go early, when the market is at work. For food, Nizam's near New Market is credited with the original kathi roll, and the city's classics are all within reach: phuchka, jhalmuri, telebhaja, Kolkata biryani, mishti doi and, in winter, nolen gur sweets. Carry cash for street food and small shops.

A day from Bhubanbari

Start early and walk north-east to Kumartuli, 1.8 km from the hotel, while the workshops are open and the lanes are still clear. Spend an hour or so among the idol makers, then take a short ride to Jorasanko Thakurbari, 1.6 km from the hotel, for the Rabindra Bharati Museum. Both stops are partly indoors, which helps if the day is warm. Return to Goabagan Street for a late lunch and a rest before the afternoon.

The afternoon suits Marble Palace, 1.5 km away, since the visit is mostly indoors and the free permit needs arranging in advance. Afterwards, head to College Street, 1.9 km from the hotel, and work along the book stalls of Boi Para. The Indian Coffee House at Albert Hall is the obvious place to sit down, and it is the one address in this quarter that everyone knows. A taxi back is easier than walking once the evening traffic sets in.

Give the evening to the river. Howrah Bridge and Mallick Ghat are 2.8 km from the hotel, and the flower market beneath the bridge is a sight in its own right. Hooghly ferries link Bagbazar, Shobhabazar, Howrah, Babughat and Belur, so a crossing can be built into the same outing; check the current timetable at the ghat. In Durga Puja week, swap the river for the pandals around Shobhabazar and Bagbazar, which sit close to the hotel.

Booking tips and when to go

Book early for Durga Puja, usually late September or October, and for the Christmas period, when Park Street and Allen Park are lit from mid-December to New Year. The International Kolkata Book Fair, usually late January or early February, also fills the city. Confirm an arrival time with the property before travelling, mention any pet in advance, and ask about parking if driving. Traffic is heavy from morning to evening on weekdays, so time station and airport runs outside the worst of it where possible.

November to February is the best window for this area. November is dry and comfortable, December and January are the coolest months with highs in the mid-twenties, and February stays pleasant for walking. March warms quickly, April and May are hot and humid with evening storms, and the monsoon runs roughly June to September with waterlogging after downpours. For the festival atmosphere rather than the comfortable weather, come for Durga Puja and check the current year's dates, since the lunar calendar moves them.

Carry cash for taxis, markets and street food, though cards and UPI are widely accepted in hotels, malls and restaurants. In yellow taxis, insist on the meter. Drink bottled water and carry it in the hot months; winter mornings can be hazy with poor air quality. At temples, dress modestly and remove your shoes, and expect long queues at Kalighat and Dakshineswar during festivals. Bengali is the local language, with Hindi and English widely understood; dhonnobad means thank you.
